Performing a complete factory reset on an Apple iPhone or iPad completely wipes all personal media files, user settings, installed applications, and encrypted passwords, returning the device to its original factory out-of-the-box state. A factory reset is essential before selling, gifting, or trading in your device to ensure your private data remains completely secure and protected from unauthorized access.

Step 1: Backup Your Essential iPhone Data

Before initiating an irreversible system wipe, create a fresh full backup of your device content. To backup via iCloud, connect your iPhone to a stable Wi-Fi network, open the Settings app, tap your Apple ID banner name at the top, select iCloud, tap iCloud Backup, and tap Back Up Now. Alternatively, connect your iPhone to a Mac computer via USB cable, open Finder, select your iPhone in the sidebar, and click Back Up All Data on This iPhone to This Mac.

Step 2: Turn Off Find My iPhone and Sign Out of Apple ID

Disabling Activation Lock is mandatory when preparing an iOS device for a new owner. If Activation Lock remains enabled, the next user will be blocked from setting up the device without your Apple ID password. To sign out safely, go to Settings > [Your Name], scroll down to the bottom, and tap Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone and sign out of Apple services.

Step 3: Execute the Factory Erase Process

Once your backup is complete and Apple ID is signed out, proceed with the device wipe:

      1. Open the iOS Settings app.
      2. Tap General, then scroll down to the bottom and select Transfer or Reset iPhone.
      3. Tap Erase All Content and Settings at the bottom of the screen.
      4. Review the summary screen displaying the data items that will be deleted, then tap Continue.
      5. Enter your device lock screen passcode or Screen Time passcode if prompted.
      6. The Apple logo and a progress bar will appear. The erase procedure typically takes between 5 to 15 minutes, after which your iPhone will reboot to the multilingual ‘Hello’ setup screen.
