Cloud computing is the on-demand delivery of computing services—including remote servers, data storage, databases, networking infrastructure, software applications, and intelligence analytics—over the internet (‘the cloud’) on a flexible pay-as-you-go pricing model. Instead of buying, owning, and maintaining physical on-premise data servers, businesses and developers lease virtual infrastructure from major global cloud service providers.

The Three Primary Cloud Service Delivery Models

Cloud architecture is divided into three core deployment service layers depending on how much management control the user requires:

      • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): The foundational cloud layer providing raw compute, virtual machines (VMs), block storage, and networking hardware. Users rent virtualized hardware and remain responsible for installing operating systems, security patches, and application frameworks. Examples: Amazon EC2, Google Compute Engine, Microsoft Azure VMs.
      • Platform as a Service (PaaS): A mid-level service model providing a pre-configured hardware and software framework environment where developers can build, deploy, and scale applications without worrying about underlying server maintenance or operating system updates. Examples: AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Heroku, Google App Engine.
      • Software as a Service (SaaS): Fully functional, end-user software applications delivered directly through a web browser or mobile app interface. The cloud provider handles all backend hosting, security maintenance, and infrastructure scaling. Examples: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Salesforce, Dropbox.

Comparing the Big Three Cloud Providers

The global cloud infrastructure market is led by three major hyper-scale tech conglomerates:

      1. Amazon Web Services (AWS): The pioneer and market share leader in cloud computing. AWS offers the broadest portfolio of cloud services, including deep machine learning tools, serverless compute (AWS Lambda), and extensive global data center availability zones.
      2. Microsoft Azure: The preferred cloud choice for enterprise organizations deeply integrated with legacy Microsoft ecosystems (such as Windows Server, Active Directory, and SQL Server). Azure excels in hybrid cloud deployments and corporate enterprise integrations.
      3. Google Cloud Platform (GCP): Renowned for its industry-leading data analytics, big data processing (BigQuery), high-performance machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow), and native Kubernetes container management services.
