Spam calls, fraudulent robocalls, and aggressive telemarketers have become an ongoing nuisance for mobile device users worldwide. Fortunately, both Apple iOS and Google Android include native filtering tools, carrier-level spam protection services, and third-party caller ID integration to help silence unwanted phone calls and protect your privacy.
Method 1: Silence Unknown Callers on iPhone (iOS)
Apple provides a powerful built-in feature to automatically silence calls from numbers that aren’t in your contacts, recent outgoing calls, or Siri suggestions. To enable this on your iPhone, open the Settings app, scroll down and tap Phone, scroll down and select Silence Unknown Callers, and toggle the switch to the On position. When an unknown number calls, your phone will not ring; instead, the call will be sent straight to voicemail and appear silently in your recent calls log.
Method 2: Blocking Individual Numbers Manually
If you receive persistent calls from a specific spammer, you can block the number directly from your call history. Open your phone’s Call Log app, tap the informational icon next to the offending phone number, scroll down to the bottom of the contact details menu, and tap Block this Caller. Once blocked, that number can no longer ring your phone or leave voice messages.
Method 3: Enabling Carrier Spam Protection Apps
Major cellular carriers provide dedicated mobile applications that automatically intercept and flag scam risks at the network level before your phone even rings. Download your carrier’s official app (such as AT&T Call Protect, Verizon Call Filter, or T-Mobile Scam Shield). These carrier apps cross-reference incoming caller metadata against national Do-Not-Call registries and known scam databases in real time.
Method 4: Android Spam Filtering & Third-Party Apps
On Android smartphones, open the default Phone app, tap the three vertical dots in the upper right, and go to Settings > Caller ID & Spam. Ensure that See caller and spam ID and Filter spam calls are both enabled. For advanced protection, you can also download trusted third-party caller ID and spam blocking utilities like **Truecaller** or **Hiya** from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to maintain an updated global spam blacklist.
