Apple’s macOS operating system features built-in screen capture utilities triggered through native keyboard shortcut combinations. Whether you are using a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or desktop iMac, mastering these core key combinations enables you to save high-resolution screen snippets instantly without downloading third-party software.

Shortcut 1: Capture the Entire Screen (Command + Shift + 3)

To take an immediate snapshot of everything visible on your desktop display across all connected monitors, press Command (⌘) + Shift + 3 simultaneously. Your Mac will play a camera shutter sound effect, and a floating interactive thumbnail will appear briefly in the lower-right corner of your screen. By default, macOS automatically saves the captured high-resolution image directly onto your Desktop formatted as a PNG file labeled with the precise timestamp.

Shortcut 2: Capture a Selected Portion of the Screen (Command + Shift + 4)

When you only want to snippet a specific image, graphic, or paragraph of text from a web page or document, press Command (⌘) + Shift + 4. Your cursor mouse pointer will instantly transform into a precision crosshair coordinate tool. Left-click and drag the crosshairs around the specific area you want to isolate, then release the trackpad or mouse button to capture. If you want to reposition your selection area before capturing, hold down the Spacebar while dragging.

Shortcut 3: Capture a Single Specific Application Window

To isolate a single app window or menu bar while generating a clean transparent drop-shadow background, press Command (⌘) + Shift + 4, then tap the Spacebar once. Your crosshair pointer will change into a camera icon. Hover the camera icon over the desired window (the window will highlight in translucent blue) and left-click to take the shot.

Shortcut 4: Open the Graphical Screenshot Overlay Menu (Command + Shift + 5)

Pressing Command (⌘) + Shift + 5 launches the full graphical Screen Capture app overlay. This control bar provides options to record full or partial video screen recordings, set a 5-second or 10-second delay timer, and customize your default save destination folder (such as Documents, Mail, or Clipboard).
