In this pandemic situation, the term which I am hearing frequently is “Herd immunity”. I want to know what is herd immunity and how does it protect us from infectious diseases like COVID and its new variants. How is this herd immunity achieved? can anyone please explain to me about herd immunity and how is it related to COVID? Does herd immunity give us indirect protection to face COVID new variants? Please clarify my doubts about herd immunity. Thank you.

Herd immunity in the sense, a larger section of people in a country or in a area or in a region, gone through viral infection and got some sort of resistance or antibodies. Thus they can withstand the future infections from this virus.
As their immune system already know the virus structure, the antibodies which are developed in the previous infection will raises the immunity so that it won’t get easily spread like in the past. This is called herd immunity and this herd immunity takes time. And not all viruses get control through this herd immunity. Some viral infections don’t come under this category ( ex hiv).
