   GitHub is a Git repository hosting service which provides a platform for software developers to collaborate. It is basically like a social networking where the software developers has their own profile providing their past work, their current projects and the collaborations with other developers for projects.

   The service includes access controls and many collaboration features such as tools for basic task management and other projects that you are working on.

   There are various uses of Github which makes it most popular among software developing community:

   • Connect with like minded people – It helps software developers to get connected with like minded people and collaborating with them which brings out new ideas and improvement in the projects and also deriving innovative ideas from the uploaded code.

    

   • Its a Git repository – It works as a social platform and is also one of the largest coding communities where they they showcase their projects and can have a chance to work with other developers .

    

   • Helps in tracking the changes and improvements in your code – With large number of software developers involved and collaborations and constant changes of your code, GitHub keeps a track of all these changes and saves the previous versions of the code for the record.

    

   Lets see some steps on how to use GitHub :

   • In order to use GitHub, you have to first sign up and create your own account. You can create your account for free but in this you can only get three collaboration for private repositories.
   • Then you have to install Git. It is important to install Git in your system as it is a version control system and helps in tracking the source code changes.
   • Now create a repository where you can store your projects or anything including files, spreadsheets, images and other important data. In order to create a new repository, you have to click on ‘new repository’ in the top right corner.
   • After this you have to create a branch and after making changes, editing and several approvals it will become a master branch. For this you have to choose ‘branch master’ where you have to type a branch name and then click on create branch.
   • Now, create and commit changes to the branch
   •  If you want your branch to be merged with other person’s branch then for this you have to open a pull request. You can make a pull request anytime after completing a commit.
