The reason that your desktop icons are disappearing because it is possible that your desktop icon visibility settings were toggled off, which caused them to disappear. This can be human error or caused by an application you recently used or installed.
To fix desktop icons not working and not showing on desktop are:
STEP 1:Select Start , open Settings , then under Personalization , select Themes .
STEP 2:Under Themes, scroll down and select Desktop icon settings.
STEP 3: Choose the icons you would like to have on your desktop, then select Apply and OK.
